Kindergarten Beginning Manuscript is a completely new addition to the A Reason For Handwriting program. Recommended for the Kindergarten / K5 level, it introduces children to proper letter formation.

The brightly-illustrated book features animals and God's creation. After reviewing the basic strokes used in letter formation, kids will first trace, then move on to writing upper and lower case manuscript letters in weekly lessons. Each day's lesson can be completed in only 10-15 minutes.

At the end of each week, your child will trace words or letters in a Scripture verse, then decorate one of our exclusive Border Sheets. Completed sheets can be displayed at home, gifted to grandparents, or used to minister to a neighbor, Sunday School teacher, or other loved ones.

The Beginning Manuscript worktext begins with 2 weeks reviewing the strokes used in letter formation. This section is followed by 33 weekly lessons 13 focusing on lower case letters, 13 for upper case, and seven lessons reviewing all of the letters. For additional review, each lesson includes an optional practice page.

Definite improvement from the original

My comparison of this edition to the last edition.
Pros- This one is a much thicker book than the old one. This has more lessons or appears to have more content than before. This one DOES the BIBLE VERSES that were missing from the previous edition. The price is still reasonable. They do offer a set of tactile manipulatives to use with this; which was not previously available. Also, if you need pre-writing activities there is now a preschool one available too.

Cons- Its not super colorful. If you are looking to have it perfectly align with the teacher guide you already have (or that you've used with 3 other kids) then you will have to rework some things. It doesn't perfectly line up but some things do align with the original teachers guide. I wish it had more variation in the lesson plans, more games, and fun. It also contains possible errors in grammar in places that can be irritating.

I bought this curriculum because I wanted a fun, age appropriate, handwriting program for my kindergartner this year. I am happy with the changes they made to the new edition. I love the biblical tie ins in this curriculum. I love that it gives a purpose to learning handwriting. That's why I purchased it and if that is what you are looking for I think you will be happy with this curriculum.

Suggestions to the publisher: There are a few things that would make this curriculum even better. 1- Fix any grammatical errors. 2- Make it more colorful to appeal to young kids while still having opportunities for coloring throughout. 3- Vary your lesson plans more to make it more fun. (If you complete the password [write a part of this lesson] you can color this picture. Draw this letter in the air 3 times and you can move the rock and see inside. Have crafts embedded in it. Have QR codes[or an app] that lead to videos showing the proper way to write a letter or telling a story that goes along with that page. Have an app that allows the student to write using their finger over the tree house and then allow it to use different backgrounds. Add a game like a version of pictionary but students have to take a letter and make it perfect and then make it into a picture. Like drawing a 'S' and then making it look like a snake. Then having the parent guess it. ) Appeal to a child's imagination. 4- Include reward stickers for when they finish a lesson. 5- Offer a PDF version of the teachers manual for just the new edition of this for those that already have the old teachers guide.

This book, 'Kindergarten Beginning Manuscript' is a completely new addition to the A Reason For Handwriting series, designed to be more developmentally appropriate for 5-6 year olds. While letters are introduced in the same order as the previous Level K book, the lessons do not correspond with the existing teacher guidebook and are not intended to do so.

Teacher materials for 'Kindergarten Beginning Manuscript' are in the final stages of development, and our comprehensive teacher guidebook will be updated. In the meantime, free PDF teacher materials will be available for download from our website in August 2024.

For parents familiar with A Reason For Handwriting Level K from previous years, that book has been revised and expanded with more pre-writing exercises, and is now published as 'Pre-K Letter Introduction.' Free teaching materials for that worktext will also be available for download from our website.

Regarding 'grammatical errors' in the worktext: after reviewing the linked YouTube review, we found that the stated examples reflect translation choices in the Bible verses. For all levels, A Reason For Handwriting uses the Living Bible, which was chosen because the vocabulary is appropriate for elementary students. Capitalization and word choices in 'Kindergarten Beginning Manuscript' are transcribed directly from TLB with no changes to the original text.

There are three supplemental resource kits available for the Kindergarten level. We're excited to be able to offer several exclusive items — including a dry erase board with our treehouse letter guide on one side and writing practice lines on the other, a set of Alphabet Letter Cards to help young learners with letter formation, a set of Weekly Verse Cards to use for memorization, and a set of scissor practice cards — as well as a variety of other writing aids and manipulatives to engage students and develop the manual dexterity, strength, and hand/eye coordination that are so important to handwriting.
