    Overall great program but…

I love how this spelling curriculum is Bible based, includes some Charlotte Mason elements and various activities that include other LA elements. However, I have 2 issues. 1. For the life of me, I cannot understand why a Christian homeschool curriculum would include a story about kids needing to be brave for a flu shot when it is a well known fact that many in this demographic do not believe in vaccines! We will have to miss the story element and all related activities that week. This seriously needs revised. 2. My teacher’s manual is not matching my student workbook. For example, lesson 2 includes a word search under “other word forms” that the student book does not have. Every lesson there is a discrepancy like this. I am guessing I have a unrevised version mismatched with a revised version? The two books came seran wrapped together from Christianbook.com. Please advise.

#1: The read-aloud story for Level C, Lesson 4, does mention a mother taking her kids to the doctor for a flu shot, required by their school, as an example of the week's theme of 'being glad in the Lord' even in unpleasant circumstances. Our company does not advocate for or against immunization; rather, we support the right of parents to make medical decisions on behalf of their children. Having said that, our materials are used not only by homeschooling families but in faith-based schools around the world, and we believe that anxiety about a 'shot' — whether that's a vaccine, allergy treatment, dental procedure, or something else — is a relatable experience for many children.

#2: Regarding the 'missing' portion of Lesson 2, the lesson plan mentions that the activity is found in the appendix of the teacher guidebook. Every lesson includes this optional student worksheet, which can be assigned to the student (or not) at the teacher's discretion. This allows extra flexibility to tailor the assignments to struggling or advanced students, and to different instructional schedules.

    Flu shots & fleas

We were loving this curriculum until we saw a lesson dealing with vaccines (may 2023)

Thank you for expressing your concerns, Julia. It is true that in Lesson 4 of Level C, the weekly Spelling story does mention a mother taking her kids to the doctor. The theme of the story is 'being glad in the Lord' even in unpleasant circumstances — in this case, a flu shot that is required by the children's school due to a particularly virulent strain of illness. It is certainly not the focus of the story, and we do not advocate for or against immunization. We understand that some families (or schools) would not make the same choice, and fully support the right of parents to make medical decisions on behalf of themselves and their children. — the team at A Reason For

We started using this curriculum after a month or so in another strictly-phonics based program My son has a good grasp of phonics so the other was not challenging enough A Reason For Spelling is based on high-frequency used words with a minor emphasis on phonics (words with similar sounds grouped together) The 1st thing I love about this curriculum is that there is a placement test which you can access on the publisher's website to help determine which level your child should use - great for homeschoolers! The 2nd thing I love is the variety of activities to practice the spelling list - way beyond just writing & saying it like our other curriculum The activities incorporate other language art skills like dictation word shapes proofreading etc There are so many activities that you can tailor the lesson to fit your needs The 3rd thing I love is that each list includes a review activity for each of the 4 main learning styles You can choose your child's strength or mix it up for variety Lastly it is Bible based with a key verse and character story each week These themes correspond with the A Reason for Handwriting lessons on the same level I found the teacher's manual helpful and would recommend it as it contains additional material like the key verse emphasis stories as well as answer keys There is little teacher prep each week; I just choose which activities my son will do for the week
